The employment of an art graphic artist as a public high-speed draftsman has been known since at least the 19th century. One of the representatives is the Dane Robert Storm Petersen (1882–1949). Apart from the sideline for artists in the vaudeville theater, documentary draftsmen for events, such as court sessions, with the ability to draw extremely quickly and precisely, were also in demand. Traditions of high-speed commercial drawing in artist quarters such as the Place du Tertre in Paris go back to this period. The activity then experienced an upswing with the emergence of tourism in the Mediterranean area, for example at St. Mark's Square in Venice or on the beaches. This has decreased again due to the general availability of cameras.

Quick draftsmen are mostly freelance, for example at fairs, trade fair events or as court draftsmen . There is the group of street artists who work at their own financial risk in tourist places such as beach promenades, amusement parks or pedestrian zones and are paid for by their walk-in customers per picture, as well as the group of trade fair, wedding or event artists who are provided by the respective organizer a previously negotiated fee. It is z. B. an hourly or daily rate agreed, the number of pictures drawn is not relevant. In this case, the pictures are free of charge for the guests to be drawn.

Cheeky caricatures are often drawn. Just as popular are quick portraits that emphasize the essentials with less exaggeration and capture the person portrayed in their personality. Drawn live documentations of weddings and celebrations are also becoming increasingly popular as party entertainment and special memories. Quick draftsmen can always look over their shoulder.

Well-known contemporary quick draftsmen are for example Oskar , who from 1971 onwards in Hans Rosenthal's television show Dalli Dalli made a caricature of a candidate within a short period of time. In 1993, Gero Hilliger was first included in the Guinness Book of Records as a quick draftsman, after drawing a portrait of a person he did not know in just 9.4 seconds.

Annual international meetings of quick draftsmen and caricaturists are the Eurocature in Vienna and the ISCA (International Society of Caricature Artists) Convention in different cities in the USA.
