from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Agnes of Austria (* 1151 or 1154; † January 13, 1182 ) from the House of Babenberg was Queen of Hungary and Duchess of Carinthia .

Life

She was born as the eldest daughter of Duke Heinrich II Jasomirgott of Austria and Bavaria (* 1107, † 1177) and his second wife Theodora Komnena .

Her first marriage was in 1166/67 (or 1168) with the Hungarian King Stephen III. married. The marriage was brokered by Stephan's mother Euphrosina , a Kiev princess who maintained good contacts with the German principalities. The couple remained childless and Stephan died after six years of marriage at the age of 25, according to rumors, by poisoning. After the early death of her husband, the young Agnes returned to Austria.

In 1173 she married Hermann II , Duke of Carinthia. The marriage was also short-lived, as Duke Hermann died eight years later. Duchess Agnes died a year after him. From this marriage came their two sons Ulrich and Bernhard, who successively became dukes of Carinthia. Ulrich III. , the son and successor of the younger son Bernhard, died childless, whereby Carinthia fell first to Bohemia and later to Austria .

Duchess Agnes was buried next to her parents in the crypt of the Schottenkirche in Vienna .
