Agnes zu Solms-Laubach (born January 7, 1578 in Laubach ; † November 23, 1602 in Laubach) was a Countess of Solms-Laubach and, by marriage, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel .

Life

Agnes was a daughter of Count Johann Georg zu Solms-Laubach (1546–1600) from his marriage to Margarete (1554–1606), daughter of Count Georg I von Schönburg-Glauchau .

At the age of 15, she married Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel in Kassel on September 23, 1593 . The wedding was celebrated lavishly and in the presence of numerous princely people. The marriage to the Calvinist Countess strengthened Moritz's relations with the Calvinist Counts of Wetterau considerably, although Moritz had chosen Agnes as his wife more out of inclination than out of dynastic calculations.

Agnes has been described as extraordinarily gifted, beautiful, and gracious. Matthäus Merian made an engraving of the landgrave with her husband and children. Moritz reported in writing about his great loss to King Henry IV of France the day after the death of his wife .

progeny

From their marriage, Agnes had the following children:

⚭ 1. 1613 Princess Katharina Ursula of Baden-Durlach (1593–1615)
⚭ 2. 1617 Princess Agnes Magdalena of Anhalt-Dessau (1590–1626)
⚭ 1618 Duke Johann Albrecht II of Mecklenburg-Güstrow (1590–1636)
