Agostinho da Cruz

Frei Agostinho da Cruz , actually Agostinho Pimenta, (born May 3, 1540 in Ponte da Barca , Portugal , † May 14, 1619 in Setúbal , Portugal) was a Portuguese spiritual poet and monk . He was the brother of Diogo Bernardes and is considered one of the most important spiritual poets in Portugal.

Life

Agostinho da Cruz was born as Agostinho Pimenta in Ponte de Barca. He was the brother of the poet Diogo Bernardes. As a teenager he came to the court of the Infante Dom Duarte , the nephew of King Emanuel I , where he was educated and during this time he met the 3rd Count of Aveiro and his son, the Count of Terras Novas.

On May 3, 1560, on his birthday, he entered the Capuchin monastery of Santa Cruz de Sintra and began his novitiate . From 1605 he lived as a hermit in a hermitage in the Serra da Arrábida until his death . His religious name was now "Agostinho da Cruz".

Spiritual poetry

His poetry is shaped by a deep piety , the landscape of the Serra da Arràbida, faith and nature. During his lifetime he did not publish a separate book; all editions of the verses were later compiled from various almanacs, anthologies and compilations. In 1918 the first complete edition of his work was published from the above compilations.
