Ahmed Afif

Ahmed Afif (* 6. January 1967 ) is a politician of the Seychelles from the Seychelles National Party , which since 2018 Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly is.

Life

Ahmed Afif began his professional career as an employee of the Central Bank of Seychelles , the country's central bank , after attending the Polytechnic in 1987 . In 1989 he started studying mathematics, operations research , statistics and economics at the University of Warwick with financial support through a scholarship , which he obtained in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Maths, Operational Research, Statistics & Economics) completed. After his return, he first worked for the Ministry of Industry and then in 1994 a special working group of the Central Bank, which advised the Seychelles government on the development of the international economic sector. In 1995 he moved to the newly founded offshore authority SIBA (Seychelles International Business Authority) and then to the Ministry of Finance. After a further position in the office of the Vice-President, he became a member of the Presidential Office, where he was an advisor to President France-Albert René and, from 2004, his successor James Alix Michel for economic and daily politics.

In 2005, Afif became Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Seychelles International Business Authority (SIBA) and held this role until 2007, when he was Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Commerce between 2007 and 2012. He was also a member of various government bodies and was also chairman of the board of the two state-owned banks, Nouvobanq and Seychelles Savings Bank . In these functions, he played a key role in the drafting and implementation of the government's major macroeconomic reforms in 2008, including important tax and currency reforms. After leaving the government in 2012, he worked as an economic and financial advisor in the private sector.

In the parliamentary elections from September 8 to 10, 2016, Ahmed Afif was elected member of the National Assembly for the Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS) party and has since represented the constituency of Anse Etoile . At the beginning of his membership in parliament he was deputy chairman of the committee for finance and public accounts and also parliamentary director (chief whip ) of the opposition LDS. After Nicholas Prea was elected as the successor to Patrick Pillay as Speaker of the National Assembly and thus President of Parliament on March 6, 2018 , Afif von Prea took over the office of Deputy Speaker .
