Ahmed Masjed Jamei ( Persian احمد مسجدجامعی, Born June 6, 1956 in Tehran ) is an Iranian academic and reform politician who has been the chairman of the Tehran City Council since September 3, 2013; from 2000 to 2005 he was Minister of Culture under President Mohammad Chātami . He is a member of the National Confidence Party .

Life

Masjed Jamei holds a master's degree in human geography from Tehran University . Masjed Jamei became minister of culture on December 19, 2000 after Ataollah Mohajerani was forced to resign because of criticism by the ultra-conservatives that he was “eroding moral standards”. Masjed Jamei previously served as Deputy Minister of Culture since August 22, 1997.

As Minister of Culture, Masjed Jamei tried to promote freedom of the press . He said it helps prevent "negative fears" from building up in society. However, his efforts were undermined by Ali Khamene'i . Khamene'i ordered the ban on over 100 newspapers during Masjed Jamei's tenure as Minister of Culture, and numerous journalists were arrested. Masjed Jamei protested against the closure of the newspapers and the arrest of numerous journalists, albeit without any effect. Jamei remained in office until August 2, 2005.

Dialogue of Civilizations

After Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was elected President in the 2005 presidential election , Masjed Jamei was appointed Executive Director of the International Center for Dialogue among Civilizations, an institution founded by Chatami.

Chairman of the City Council

After the local elections in 2006 he became city councilor of Tehran on January 11, 2007 and was re-elected in 2013: After the local elections in 2013, Masjed Jamei was appointed chairman of the city council of Tehran by the reformers . On September 3, 2013 Masjed Jamei was elected chairman with 16 of 31 votes, replacing Mehdi Tschamran .
