Aitor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aitor is a male name .

Origin and meaning

The name comes from the Basque language . It probably goes back to the Basque word “Aita” (Eng. Father , lord ), but there is also the verb “Aitor (tu)” (Eng. Confess ). The Basque writer Agustín Chaho (1811-1858) invented the name in his work La leyenda de Aitor (Eng. The legend of Aitor ). In this work, Aitor is a god whose seven sons founded the seven provinces of the Basque Country . It is believed that Chaho borrowed the name from the Basque "Ationen Zemeak" (Eng. Sons of good parents ; synonym for Hidalgo ), which is also often spelled "Aitoren Zemeak", by using it as "Aitor-en" (Eng. von Aitor ), so that "Aitor-en Zemeak" (Eng. Sons of Aitor ) was created.
