Neon babies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Neonbabies was a German pop / new wave formation from the early 1980s . They belonged to the most influential bands of the West Berlin NDW scene .

history

The band Neonbabies came together in Berlin at the beginning of 1979. The sisters Inga Humpe (* 1956), called "DiLemma", and Annette Humpe (* 1950), called "Anita Spinetti" were among its founding members .

The group made their first appearance in the spring of 1979 in the Gasthaus an der Havel . The concerts were considered the highlight of the 1979/1980 concert season. Later they were able to make their first recordings in the senate's own beat studio with Nikolaus Polak ( guitar ), Conny Homeyer ( bass ), Toni Nissl ( drums ) and Reinhard Meermann ( saxophone ). The EP was released in early 1980, including a first version of the later ideal hit Blaue Augen . In the fall of 1980, their second EP, Die Krönung , was released. It had an edition of 1000 and was sold out after a few days. The neon babies were now an integral part of the Berlin music scene and were worshiped almost cult-like.

At the beginning of 1980 Annette Humpe founded the band Ideal and was replaced by the singer Petra Mikolajczuk ("Miko") . But she was only heard on the 1981 debut album Neonbabies . The record was released on the Berlin independent label Good Noise Records. Despite alternative distribution channels, it sold around 20,000 times. In 1982 Dave Hutchins produced the second LP Harmlos in the Conny Plank studio , which was released on Ariola Records . A tour through Germany followed in the early summer of 1982. They also played at the Dutch festival Berlin – Amsterdam and gave their first live television concert. In August, the neon babies performed at a concert in Berlin's Waldbühne , which was also broadcast on ARD's third program . After Nikolaus Polak left, he was replaced by Toni Kambiz, the group was able to win Drafi Deutscher as a producer for their single Ich bin ein Mann in autumn 1982 . However, sales fell far short of expectations. The third album, entitled 1983 , was directed by Gareth Jones in 1982/1983. It was recorded in the Berlin Hansa studios and was also published by Ariola. A short time later the group broke up. Conny Homeyer left the band and Inga Humpe took part in the DÖF project produced by her sister . The single Codo was a great success.

With Eiskalte Engel , the last Neonbabies single was released in October 1983. It was a remix of the title Engel from the 1983 album and was considered a parting gift for her fans.
