location

The Ak Sai waterfall is located in the Kyrgyz region of Tschüi in the north of the country. The Kyrgyz capital Bishkek is about 40 kilometers north of the Ala-Artscha National Park. The region is characterized by the mountains of the Kyrgyz Mountains , the western part of the Tian Shan . The highest peak of the Kyrgyz Mountains is the Semyonov-Tjan-Shansky peak , which is also located in the Ala-Artscha National Park, southeast of the waterfall. Ak Sai Waterfall is part of the Ak Sai River, which flows down from the glaciated areas near the mountain peaks, including the Ak Sai Glacier.

use

Ak Sai Waterfall is of tourist interest and is considered the most famous attraction of the national park. The waterfall can be reached from the visitor parking lot of the national park via a partially marked hiking trail, the route takes about two hours. This comparatively short hike is popular with tourists and visitors from nearby Bishkek. There are also guided tours with a local guide. From the waterfall, more difficult hikes can be undertaken in the direction of the Ak Sai Glacier or the Racek Hut, a base camp for mountaineers from the Soviet era at an altitude of 3200 meters .

The waterfall regularly freezes over in winter. The resulting bizarre ice formations are of great beauty and are also used by ice climbers .
