The Ak 5 ( Automatkarbin 5 ) is a Swedish assault rifle .

development

Sweden added its first rapid-fire rifle to its arsenal in 1963, the Ak 4 . This was based on a G3 build under license from Heckler & Koch . It was only replaced by Ak 5 in 1984. The aim of the new development was to switch to the new NATO standard caliber, i.e. to convert from the old 7.62 mm cartridges to the 5.56 × 45 mm cartridge. After intensive tests for the new design and construction of the Ak 5, the Swedes had to choose from eleven possible forms of the new assault rifle. The choices were, among others, licensed builds of the Israeli Galil , the German Heckler & Koch 33 , the US Colt M16A2 , the Swiss SIG SG-540 and the Belgian FN FNC . The Swedish Army decided to introduce the most advanced weapon, the FN FNC. Changes in contrast to the Ak 4 were the already mentioned NATO cartridge, the missing 3-shot automatic and better processing of the metal used (in terms of corrosion and service life).

commitment

In 1986 the first deliveries by Fabrique Nationale (FN) from Belgium began. Manufacturing was taken over by Bofors in Sweden and the name was officially changed to Ak 5. The stock, shoulder rest and flap were also modified to better defy arctic weather conditions, as many Ak 4s failed under the harsh conditions in Sweden. The Ak 5 can also be upgraded in many ways, for example with the M203 grenade launcher . There is also the shortened version Ak 5D, which is used by the paratroopers of the Swedish army. The Ak 5B is equipped with a telescopic sight, the effective range exceeds that of the Ak 5 by approx. 200 m.

variants

Ak 5B

The Ak 5B is the sniper version with a quadruple rifle scope , making the weapon 900 g heavier than the standard version.

Ak 5C / Ak 5CF

The Ak 5C is a more modern version of the Ak 5. New is a Picatinny rail for attaching aiming aids .

Before the Ak 5C went into mass production, it was extensively tested. This model was called Ak 5CF, where the F stands for försök , which translated means experiment . These tests were completed in June 2005 and 4 months later the Swedish Army signed a contract with Bofors to retrofit 40,000 weapons. The conversion should take 4 years; the first weapons were delivered to the units of ISAF , UNMIL and KFOR in 2006.

Differences to the standard version

Ak 5D

The Ak 5D is the short version of the Ak 5C. It has a shorter barrel and a shorter overall length. The weapon is used for urban warfare or for purposes where a larger weapon would be a hindrance.
