history

In the course of the educational reform of the 1960s and 1970s, the craft art schools of the post-war period - the former providers of education in product design in West Germany - were transferred to the newly created technical colleges as design courses with an industrial focus. Who work art schools nor the design education and training needs satisfied crafts, artisans without was high school or college entrance access to creative and artistic education closed by this reform. This lack of pedagogical and didactic introduction to design in the craft as well as a lack of professional product development was recognized in the 1980s. In order to make craftsmen competitive again, a number of educational measures were launched by the Chamber of Crafts and the Central Association of German Crafts (ZDH). In the continuing education landscape of vocational training, design was anchored as a learnable success factor alongside technology and business management. With the cooperation of Gottfried Böckelmann, University of Applied Sciences Hildesheim , the ZDH is developing an interdisciplinary teaching concept aimed at craftsmen - journeymen and masters. Drawing, color design, ornamentation, photography, typography, materials science, model making as well as drafting and design are the cornerstones of the teaching concept, which is taught in a fundamental and application-oriented manner. Craftsmen learn here how to develop their design ideas and product designs into marketable concepts.

This concept was taken up in 1986 in Munich and Münster and academies for design were founded in the respective chambers of crafts. The Aachen model project Academy for Creative Crafts (1985–1990) was based on a study model designed by Hildegard Reitz (Rector of the Aachen University of Applied Sciences 1984–1987) as a three-year course with six semesters.

Today, 25 years later, 13 chambers of skilled trades nationwide are offering further training to become a designer in the craft trade , craft designer or designer (HWK) (formerly: project designer) at corresponding academies . Craftsmen complete the training with a freely chosen project work. After the examination has been taken by a publicly appointed examination committee, you will receive one of the above titles. The cross-trade networking in team projects during lessons leads to transdisciplinary approaches, some of which lead to collaboration and cooperation beyond the academy phase. Some companies position themselves in the arts and crafts environment or see themselves more closely related to design or craft design in their product design .

Time models

The academies offer different time and funding models. In the full-time course, the craftsmen temporarily leave their professional life and can take up design, drafting and practical work in the workshop in one to three years or 1200–3600 teaching hours. The part-time course takes place at different times. The tradespeople receive support through funding through master BAföG (full-time course), education vouchers from the Employment Agency (AZAV for job seekers and retraining) or through funds from the European Social Fund ESF for working craftsmen who are taking part in further training. In line with its development history, the Aachen Academy for Craft Design today offers a three-year full-time course to become a craft designer or master designer, which also includes the areas of corporate management and marketing and provides comprehensive preparation for the activity as a craft designer.

Working group of all academies

In order to harmonize developments nationwide and to coordinate activities, a working group was formed in 2008, which meets for a professional exchange with the participation of the ZDH's trade promotion agency.
