Akron County, founded in 1895, is an independent local authority in Lancaster County. It is directed by an elected city council and an elected mayor.
The economy consists mainly of small businesses. During the early days, the main industry was the manufacture of hand-made cigars, there were more than 50 cigar factories in Akron at that time. Many of these manufacturing operations consisted of back rooms in private homes and some larger ones employed large numbers of people. In 1900 there were around 650 inhabitants who made their living from cigar manufacturing. In 1911 the first central water supply with a water tower was built and in 1912 the power supply was installed in the municipality of Akron.
The largest company today with headquarters in Akron is the non-profit organization Mennonite Central Committee , which is also active as a fair trade dealer. Until 1985 there was the Miller Hess Shoe Company (shoe factory) in Akron.
Loyd H. Roland Memorial Park (also known as Akron Park) opened in 1972. It's a 70 acre park on Main Street on the east side of Akron. The park has playgrounds, hiking trails, bike paths, a lake, and an 18-hole golf course with picnic pavilions. The lake in the park is the most important source of the community's water supply and is particularly protected as a water catchment area.
