Abu Muhammad Ali ibn Ahmad al-Muktafi bi-llah ( Arabic أبو محمد علي بن أحمد المكتفي بالله, DMG Abū Muḥammad ʿAlī b. Aḥmad al-Muktafī bi-'llāh ; * 875 ; † August 13, 908 ) was the seventeenth caliph of the Abbasid dynasty from 902 until his death .

Al-Muktafi, a son of the caliph al-Mutadid (892-902), is considered the last caliph who was able to assert his authority in the areas under his control. Under him, the Abbasid sphere of power was once again expanded considerably when the Tulunids were overthrown in 905 with the occupation of Syria and Egypt . Although northern Syria was attacked by Byzantium in 904 , the Arab fleet under the renegade Leon of Tripoli successfully plundered the Aegean areas in return . With Thessaloniki , the Muslims were also able to conquer and plunder one of the most important Byzantine cities. In 906/907 al-Muktafi gave refuge to the Byzantine rebel Andronikos Dukas .

Under al-Muktafi, the Hamdanids came to power in Mosul and in northern Syrian Aleppo , but they recognized the caliphs in Baghdad as their overlords. In Syria, the Abbasids were also able to decisively weaken the Ismaili movement after the Bedouin revolts led by supporters of the Fatimids were suppressed. However, the Ismaili Qarmatians of al-Hasa developed into a new threat to the Abbasid caliphate.

Al-Muktafi's successor was his brother al-Muqtadir (908-932).
