In 1979, Bernstein moved from Austria to the USA . The spatial expanse of the American landscape shaped his metaphorically abstract work. Bernstein's artistic work comprises more than 900, mostly large-format works in addition to a first, classic phase, which is still aimed at the objective apprehension of things.

In 1985, Bernstein published his first hand-printed artist's book, “The Florida book of plates - in concert with nature” . More hand-printed books and so-called pigmentographies followed .

Pigmentography is a printing technique developed by Bernstein himself . A small selection of pigmentographies was exhibited in 1997 in a project with Deutsche Bahn AG in specially converted gallery wagons in 24 German cities (e.g. Karlsruhe , Frankfurt am Main , Hamburg , Berlin , Dresden ).
