Aladdin Records was founded in 1946 by brothers Eddie, Leo and Ira Mesner and was based in Hollywood . First it was called Philo Records , then the name "Aladdin Records" was introduced.
Aladdin Records was known for a number of recordings of the then very popular rhythm and blues style and early rock 'n' roll ; in addition, some important jazz recordings appeared on the label, such as titles by Coleman Hawkins , Jay McShann , Illinois Jacquet or the legendary Aladdin Sessions by Lester Young , which were produced between 1945 and 1947 by Leonard Feather . In addition to the recordings that were made in Los Angeles , some Aladdin recordings were made in New Orleans by Cosimo Matassa. The first track recorded for Philo Records was Illinois Jacquet's Flying Home , recorded in July 1945. In 1954, the Mesner brothers started the Jazz'West sub-label for the publication of 10-inch records and the Orfeo classic sub-label . In 1960 the label was sold to Lew Chudds Imperial Records and is now part of the EMI catalog .
