Alain Lascoux ( October 17, 1944 - October 20, 2013 ) was a French mathematician who studied algebraic combinatorics .

Lascoux graduated from the École polytechnique in 1966 and received his doctorate in 1967 from the University of Paris under Jean-Louis Verdier . He then did research for the CNRS , most recently as Research Director. At first he dealt with algebraic geometry, later with combinatorics. He was a professor at the University of Marne-La-Vallée , where one of the founders of the Gaspar Monge computer science laboratory . He was the head of a group of combiners at the University of Paris VII, called Phalanstère.

He dealt in particular with combinatorial questions of the symmetric group and their representation theory ( Young Tableau ). He often worked with Marcel Schützenberger . Both introduced Schubert polynomials in 1982. Together with Bernard Leclerc and Jean-Yves Thibon, he introduced LLT polynomials in 1997 (named after the first letters of their names). He also introduced Wronskian symmetrical functions and with Schützenberger Grothendieck polynomials and the plactic monoid ( Monoïde plaxique ).

Lascoux campaigned for persecuted mathematicians and women in mathematics and was active as a mathematician in China, where he was a professor at Nankai University .

He was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin (Ordonner le Groupe Symmetrique: Pourquoi Utiliser l'Algµebre de Iwahori-Hecke).
