Alan Barnard (anthropologist)

Alan John Barnard (born February 22, 1949 ) is an anthropologist and ethnologist .

Live and act

Alan Barnard has taught at the University of Edinburgh since 1978 , where he is professor of anthropology of southern Africa . He works particularly on the subjects of comparative ethnography , history of anthropology, social anthropology of human origin, origin of language and contemporary hunter-gatherers (hunter-gatherers) of the San , particularly in Botswana , Namibia and South Africa .

In 2010 he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy .

He participates in the British Academy's From Lucy to Language: The Archeology of the Social Brain project and heads the group Kinship systems in southern African non-Bantu languages: Documentation, comparison, and historical analysis of the Kalahari Basin Area project, which is run by the Economic and Social Research Council.

Alan Barnard is Honorary Consul of Namibia in Edinburgh .
