Alan Bernstein

Alan Bernstein (born June 25, 1947 in Toronto ) is a Canadian immunologist . He has been President of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research since 2012 .

Bernstein earned a BA in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Toronto in 1968 and a Ph.D. in biophysics . He went to the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London as a postdoctoral fellow , where he began working on retroviruses . From 1974 to 1985 he worked at the Ontario Cancer Institute , then at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute in Toronto, from 1988 as deputy director, from 1994 as research director. From 2000 to 2007 he was the first President of the Canadian Institute of Health Research , from 2008 to 2011 Managing Director of the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise .

Bernstein published more than 225 scientific publications in the fields of stem cell research and hematopoiesis , cancer research and gene therapy . His fundamental work on the KIT gene and the SRC proto-oncogene should be emphasized.

Berstein received numerous awards. He was awarded the McLaughlin Medal of the Royal Society of Canada in 1996 , the Robert L. Noble Prize in 1997, and the Genetics Society of Canada Award of Excellence in 1998. In 2002 he became Officer of the Order of Canada and in 2003 a member of the Royal Society of Canada. In 2008 he received the Canada Gairdner Wightman Award and in 2015 he was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame .
