The Alaska Ranger was a fishing boat , most recently owned by the Fishing Company of Alaska, based in Seattle . The ship sank in the Bering Sea on March 23, 2008.

history

The ship was built in 1973 and was originally used as an oil field supply ship. The ship sank in the Bering Sea on March 23, 2008 . At around 4 a.m., the machinist found water in the engine room. The ship sank around 4:30 a.m. The US Coast Guard considers the following sequence of events to be likely: Inadequate maintenance and repair work caused the right stern propeller to come loose and hit a hole in the fuselage. This caused a power outage, as a result of which the adjusting rotors switched to reverse. Since the engines were still running, the ship drove in reverse. Due to the water ingress in the stern, the ship pulled itself further and further under water. Of 47 men on board, 42 were rescued, 4 were recovered dead, and 1 seaman was missing.
