Alastair Pilkington
Sir Alastair Pilkington ( January 7, 1920 - May 5, 1995 ) was a British engineer .
After attending Sherborne School and Trinity College , Cambridge , he enlisted in the army. After the end of the Second World War he worked in the glass industry for the Pilkington company . There he worked on the technical implementation of the float glass process . The new production process presented to the public on January 20, 1959 soon replaced the rolling or machine drawing that had been common up until then. In 1970 he was knighted and appointed to the Central Advisory Council for Science and Technology .
