There have been many attempts by Italian breeders to refine the Albanian with Sardo-Arabs , Anglo-Arabs and Lipizzans . The mountain type should also be improved by Haflinger horses . Up to the end of the Second World War there were still around 70,000 horses of both types in Albania. More recent surveys are not yet available.
The Albanian is mainly used as a carrying, riding and light draft horse.
