Albert Alberts

Albert Alberts , written as A. Alberts (born August 23, 1911 in Haarlem , † December 16, 1995 in Amsterdam ), was a Dutch writer, translator and journalist. He won numerous awards over the course of his career, including the Constantijn Huygensprijs in 1975.

Life

Alberts studied Indology at the Rijksuniversiteit te Utrecht and after graduating in 1936 worked for several years as an official for the Colonial Ministry in Paris. In 1939 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the conflict between the Dutch politicians Jean Chrétien Baud and Johan Rudolph Thorbecke from 1847 to 1851 . In the same year he embarked on the MS Johan van Oldenbarnevelt and went to the Dutch East Indies to remain there as a civil servant. After his internment by the Japanese on Java from April 1942 to September 1945, he returned to the Netherlands in 1946. Here he worked first as a civil servant, then from 1953 as editor of De Groene Amsterdammer . In 1953 his first book was published: Die Insel - a volume with stories about everyday life in the colony.
