Albert Gleaves

Albert Gleaves (born January 1, 1858 in Nashville , Tennessee , USA , † January 6, 1937 in Haverford (Pennsylvania) , USA) was an American admiral and naval historian.

Albert Gleaves took part in the Spanish-American War and the First World War. After 1919 he carried out tests on artillery and torpedoes at the Naval Ordnance Proving Ground . He managed to develop the torpedo into a precision weapon. He also published several books.

Life

Albert Gleaves was born on January 1, the only son of Henry Albert and Eliza Tannehil Gleaves in Nashville.

In 1877 Albert Gleaves left the United States Naval Academy . He then served aboard the USS Hartford and USS Trenton and was made an ensign in 1881.

After several other career positions, he was given command of the USS Cushing during the Spanish-American War and later command of the battleship USS North Dakota .

In 1915 he was appointed rear admiral and commanded the cruisers and transport units during the First World War. He was awarded the Army Distinguished Service Medal and the Navy Distinguished Service Medal for his achievements .

On September 1, 1919 he was appointed admiral and commanded the Asian fleet until February 4, 1921, after which he would retire.

He was a member of the Naval Order of the United States with membership number 756.

Private

He was married to Evelina Mary Heap from April 25, 1863 to September 10, 1946.

Namesake

The ship USS Gleaves (DD-423) is named after him, as is the Gleaves class named after this "type ship" .
