Albert Gossauer (born February 11, 1936 in Zurich ) is a Swiss chemist . He is an emeritus full professor for organic chemistry at the University of Freiburg i. Ue. (Switzerland).

Life

Gossauer studied chemistry at the University of Madrid (graduating in 1960 with a diploma). There he was awarded a doctorate in 1962 with a preparative-stereochemical work. chem. PhD , his mentor was R. Pérez-Ossorio. In 1963 and 1964 Gossauer worked as a research assistant in the Institute for Spectroscopy of the Max Planck Society in Göttingen. From 1965 to 1978 he worked at the Institute for Organic Chemistry at the Technical University of Braunschweig (TU Braunschweig) in the vicinity of Hans Herloff Inhoffen , where he received the venia legendi in 1974 . In 1976 a research stay at Yale University (New Haven, CT, USA) followed. In 1977 he became assistant professor and in 1978 associate professor for organic chemistry at the TU Braunschweig. In 1979 he was appointed full professor at the Technical University of Berlin . From 1982 until his retirement in 2006 he was a full professor for organic chemistry at the University of Freiburg i. Ue. (Switzerland) and at the same time director of the Institute for Organic Chemistry there.

research

The focus of his research is the chemistry of heterocycles - in particular the synthesis of

  • Porphyrin derivatives (1983: synthesis of pentaphyrin; 1993: synthesis of hexaphyrin; 2000: synthesis of niphaphyrin)
  • Corrin derivatives (1977: syntheses of xanthocorrinoids)
  • Bile pigments (1974: Phycocyanobilin; 1978: Phycoerythrobilin).
  • Polyporphyrin arrangements
  • Deoxyribonucleoside Analogs
  • Pyrrole derivatives

There are also studies on the catabolism of chlorophylls (1991: structure elucidation of chlorophyll breakdown products from Chlorella protothecoides ).

In his research activities, Gossauer has written over 100 publications in specialist journals as well as articles in books. He is the author of a widely acclaimed textbook on the structure and reactivity of biomolecules.
