Carsten Schmuck (born February 20, 1968 in Oberhausen ; † August 1, 2019 ) was Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen . He was one of the authors of the book Chemistry for Medicine and author of the title Base Book, Organic Chemistry, published by Pearson.

resume

Carsten Schmuck received his diploma in chemistry in 1992 and a doctorate in organic chemistry in 1994, both at the Ruhr University in Bochum . From 1995 to 1997 he was a Feodor Lynen Foundation postdoctoral fellow with Ronald Breslow at Columbia University in New York , where he worked on cyclodextrin enzyme mimics and unnatural DNA analogs . In 2001 he completed his habilitation in supramolecular and bio-organic chemistry at the University of Cologne in Albrecht Berkessel's group . In January of the following year he received a C3 professorship in organic chemistry at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . Since 2008 he had a W3 professorship in organic chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Research priorities

His research interests were the construction of artificial receptors for biologically relevant substrates such as peptides and carbohydrates with de novo design and combinatorial methods, the investigation of self-organizing zwitterions as building blocks for supramolecular polymers and soft nanomaterials in water and the thermodynamic study of non- covalent interactions in general.

His awards include the teaching fellowship of the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie, the Karl Arnold Prize of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and an award from the University of Cologne for his habilitation thesis.

In 2017, together with Peter Wich (who did his doctorate with him) and Tanja Schirmeister, he received the literature prize of the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie for their work on the new edition of the classic Beyer-Walter textbook on organic chemistry .
