Beyer-Walter textbook of organic chemistry

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Beyer-Walter textbook on organic chemistry , often referred to simply as Beyer-Walter , is a standard work on organic chemistry , currently in its 25th edition by S. Hirzel Verlag .

history

In 1953 the first edition was published by Hans Beyer , professor of organic chemistry at the University of Greifswald , at Hirzel-Verlag in Leipzig . The first edition had 586 pages. The second, unchanged edition appeared as early as 1954; Then in 1955 a greatly expanded (647 pages) double edition, which was necessary due to the paper allocation in the GDR in order to meet the continuing demand. Up to 1970 some 10,000 copies were sold mainly in the Federal Republic . 1961 and 1966 took place with the 8th (723 pages) and 11th/12. Edition (752 pages) further expansions. From the 17th edition the book was published by S. Hirzel Verlag in Stuttgart, as there was no longer any paper allocation for this category of books in the GDR. Beyer wanted to entrust Ehrenfried Bulka with the continuation of the work. Due to the political circumstances, this was ultimately not possible for him, as the GDR leadership in 1971 forbade all employees of the Institute for Organic Chemistry in Greifswald to continue working on the work. After Hans Beyer's death in 1971, the long-time academic and family friend Wolfgang Walter took over the publication of the book, whereby the register was greatly expanded, among other things. In 1956 a translated edition appeared for the first time with the Czech edition. An English translation followed in 1963. The 18th edition was translated into Chinese in 1989 without consulting S. Hirzel Verlag and distributed in China. In 1996 and 1997 an English translation was published again containing the contents of the 21st to 23rd edition. Wittko Francke has supported Wolfgang Walter as editor since 1991 . The 24th edition is around a thousand pages long. In total, over 200,000 copies were sold by the 23rd edition.

The 25th edition, edited by Carsten Schmuck , Peter Wich and Tanja Schirmeister , received the 2017 Literature Prize of the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie . In the laudation it was said that the authors have presented a convincing and impressive revision of the traditional textbook “Beyer / Walter: Organic Chemistry” and thus virtually recreated this organic classic .

construction

The book is divided into substance classes, with the most basic aliphatic compounds being dealt with in the general section. Cyclic compounds , aromatics , heterocyclic compounds , as well as various natural substances such as amino acids , peptides and enzymes are each dealt with in separate sections. The specialty of the book is the treatment of basic chemical principles. Each principle is presented for the substance class for which it is most relevant. As a result, certain relationships are spread over several chapters and a complete picture can only be obtained using the extensive name, reaction and subject index. This leads to a usage pattern that is more like a reference work than a classic textbook.
