The S. Hirzel Verlag is a scientific and non-fiction publishing house based in Stuttgart . He is part of the media group Deutscher Apotheker Verlag .

Publishing history

The S. Hirzel Verlag was founded on January 1st, 1853 in Leipzig by Salomon Hirzel . Since the publishing house was founded, the publishing support of the German dictionary of the Brothers Grimm has been an important project of the publishing house. Theodor Mommsen's Roman History was also published by Hirzel . The most important author under the management of Salomon Hirzel was Gustav Freytag .

Salomon Hirzel's grandson Georg, who took over the publishing house in 1894, was a passionate collector of letters from poets. His uncle Ernst Reimer left him numerous letters from the Brothers Grimm, which were published in a critical edition by the publishing house.

After the Second World War, new publishing locations were set up in Stuttgart and Zurich , which have been brought together in the new headquarters in Stuttgart since 1962. In 1963, Heinrich Hirzel, the last male owner of the publishing house and bearer of the name Hirzel, died. In 1992 the publishing house was merged with the S. Hirzel Verlag Leipzig, which had been under state administration since 1952.

German studies played a central role in the publishing program from the start. The publishing program later expanded to include natural sciences . Today the S. Hirzel Verlag is particularly known for its publications in chemistry and physics as well as nutritional and environmental sciences . Well-known authors were z. B. Werner Heisenberg , Gerhart Jander , Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker and Gerhard Vollmer . From 1900 to 1945 the renowned Physikalische Zeitschrift was published by S. Hirzel Verlag . From 1946 to 2010 the monthly magazine UNIVERSITAS - Orientation in the world of knowledge was published by S. Hirzel Verlag .

Archives of the publisher are located in the Saxon State Archives, Leipzig State Archives and form the holdings there.

The publisher is a member of the German Book Trade Association .
