Gerhard Vollmer

Gerhard Vollmer (born November 17, 1943 in Speyer ) is a German physicist and philosopher who became known in particular for his work on evolutionary epistemology .

Life

Vollmer studied mathematics , physics and chemistry in Munich , Berlin , Hamburg and Freiburg . After graduating in physics in 1968, he also studied philosophy and linguistics in Freiburg .

In 1971 he received his doctorate in theoretical physics under Siegfried Flügge in Freiburg . There he then worked as a research assistant until 1975 , with a one-year stay in Montreal . He also received his PhD in philosophy in 1974.

Vollmer taught from 1975 to 1981 as an academic advisor at the University of Hanover , from 1981 to 1991 as a professor of biophilosophy at the University of Giessen and from 1991 to 2008 as a professor of philosophy at the Technical University of Braunschweig . His areas of work are logic, epistemology and science theory, natural philosophy, and artificial intelligence.

In 2004 he was awarded the Eduard Rhein Foundation's culture prize “for laying the foundations for an evolutionary epistemology and for his outstanding role as a mediator between the natural sciences and the humanities” .

Vollmer is a member of the scientific advisory board of the Bavarian Humanistic Academy , the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina Halle (since 1998), the Academia Europaea (since 2007), the Giordano Bruno Foundation , the Braunschweig Scientific Society and the Hans Albert Institute. He is also co-editor of the journal Enlightenment and Criticism and is a member of the Scientific Council of the Society for the Scientific Study of Parasciences .
