Wittko Ernst Georg Francke (born November 28, 1940 in Reinbek ) is a German chemist . He lives in Reinbek near Hamburg .

Live and act

In Kurt Heyns doctorate Francke 1973 on the "Detection and identification of aggregation substances in the Ambrosia beetle Xyloterus domesticus L (Coleoptera Scolytidae)" . In 1979 he completed his habilitation on "Contributions to the knowledge of chemical communication in beetles" . He has been a professor in Hamburg since 1985 . He declined appointments to chairs at the University of Gießen (1985) and the University of Heidelberg (1990). His research areas are insect pheromones and the biological degradation of pollutants and natural substances in aquatic organisms. Francke also worked in the academic self-administration at the University of Hamburg and across the region. He was a member of the Academic Senate (1986–2002), Director of the Institute for Organic Chemistry (1992–1994 and 2004–2006), Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry (1994–1999) and Dean of Studies (2003–2006). Between 1996 and 2004 Francke was chairman of the Liebig Association for Organic Chemistry at the GDCh . Francke has been on the advisory board of the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena since 1998 . In addition, he was co-editor of several scientific journals. Chemical ecology is one of his main areas of research.

His work was u. a. awarded the Otto Wallach plaque from the Society of German Chemists (GDCh), the Karl Escherich Medal and honorary doctorates from the Swedish universities of Gothenburg (1997) and Lund (2005). Since 2004 he has been co-author of the well-known Beyer-Walter textbook on organic chemistry ( ISBN 3-7776-1221-9 ).

Francke is married and has two sons.
