Albert Joseph Gasteiger Freiherr von Ravenstein and Kobach (born March 28, 1823 in Innsbruck , † July 5, 1890 in Bolzano ) was an Austrian diplomat , civil engineer and explorer at the Persian court .

Life

After completing humanistic and technical studies, he joined the Austrian state construction service as an engineer in 1846 and was involved in the construction of the Semmering Railway, where he helped build the double viaduct near Schottwien. In 1859 he volunteered as a first lieutenant in the Tyrolean state rifle company, which was recruited from Steinach am Brenner, in the war against Italy. Because of his language skills, he accepted an appointment to Persia and became a teacher at the Military Academy in Tehran. Persia owed the development of the most important highways and fortifications to his work in the formation of the Persian pioneer corps and as the Imperial Genius Director (1863-68: the high road from Tehran to Mazendaran on the Caspian Sea, 1886-88 the Meshed-Azkabat road and others). As the first European to be awarded the title of Khan of Persia, Gastager was called Khan , he also worked as Austrian honorary consul and Persian ambassador 1st class; this enabled him to establish close economic ties between Persia and Austria-Hungary. Numerous deliveries of goods for the Persian army and lively relations between the Persian and Austrian military authorities were based on his suggestions. In 1888 he returned home.
