Career

Association, 1951 to 1961

"Däumling" Albert "Abbes" Keck was first a youth and then an amateur player at 1. FC Saarbrücken, before he returned from the 1951/52 season - after a three-year break, the DFB and the Saarland Football Association (SFB) at FIFA saw the return of the FCS and Borussia Neunkirchens reached the upper league - which belonged to the league eleven under coach Gustl Jordan . The regular defenders were Franz Immig and Theo Puff . “Abbes” Keck, on the other hand, was always on the go for the defense but also in the storm, where he stormed in several games on the left wing; including his use on February 17, 1952 on the Betzenberg in the 1: 3 defeat against the "Walter-Elf", with which the German champions of 1951 could no longer equalize the lead of the blue-blacks in the standings. With a six point lead over TuS Neuendorf and even nine points over the "Red Devils", 1. FC Saarbrücken celebrated the championship in the Oberliga Südwest. In the successful final round of the German championship - the FCS only failed in the final with 2: 3 goals at VfB Stuttgart - Keck was not used. From his second league year, 1952/53, he formed the defender couple of the Elf from Malstatt as the successor to Immig with Puff. Despite the successful goalscorers Herbert Binkert (22 goals) and Herbert Martin (21 goals), the title was not defended in the southwest. Fritz Walter led his team to the championship and overcame the FCS after winning 2-1 goals in the first half of the season in the second half of the season with 9-0. The proven final trio around goalkeeper Erwin Strempel and the defender couple Keck - Puff were just as powerless as the striker duo Binkert - Martin. The surprising 2: 3 defeat on the penultimate round match day at FV Speyer after a 2-0 lead prevented the runner-up against the tied Neuendorf. After two further third places in the rounds of 1954/55 and 1955/56, Keck moved back to the final round of the German championship with Saarbrücken in 1957 as the Southwest runner-up.

Previously, Keck and his colleagues had played in the 1955/56 series as Saar representatives in the European Cup . On November 1, 1955, they sensationally won 4: 3 goals at AC Milan . In the second leg on November 23rd, however, the men around Cesare Maldini , Nils Liedholm , Gunnar Nordahl and Juan Schiaffino prevailed with 4-1 goals and thus the European appearances for Keck and his teammates were over. The three final round matches in June 1957 against Hamburger SV (1: 2), Duisburger Spiel-Verein (1: 3) and 1. FC Nürnberg (2: 2) were unsuccessful. This is exactly what happened to Keck at the end of his career at FCS, when, after winning the championship in 1960/61 with his club under coach Jenő Csaknády in the final round, again with 4: 8 points against competitors Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt and Hamburger SV Place in the group games for the German championship.

From the 1957/58 season, the uncompromising but fair left defender Erich Rohe defended at his side ; from 1959 Werner Hesse joined the team from Ludwigsparkstadion as a middle runner and head of defense and Heinz Vollmar attacked as a dangerous striker .

Overall, Keck is led from 1951 to 1961 with 222 league appearances (six goals) and eight games in the final round of the German championship. In the summer of 1961, Keck ended his high-class playing career.

Selection player

From 1953 to 1956, under the later national coach Helmut Schön , Keck played in ten international matches in the Saarland national soccer team. He made his debut on June 24, 1953 in Oslo in the World Cup qualifier against Norway in the Saarn national team. Surprisingly, the SFB selection won the game with 3-2 goals. Two months later, the Herberger-Elf had to be content with a 1-1 draw in Oslo. His second use was the qualifying second leg on March 28, 1954 in Saarbrücken against Germany. In the 1: 3 defeat he defended together with Nikolaus Biewer against the DFB winger Helmut Rahn and Hans Schäfer . Keck also belonged to the Saarelf, who ended the era of official Saarland internationals with the international match on June 6, 1956 in Amsterdam, with a 2-3 defeat.

Three months later, the SFB was again a member of the DFB as a national association, Keck made his debut in the international match in Moscow against the Soviet Union in the German B national team . In addition to teammates such as goalkeeper Heinz Kubsch , defender colleague Georg Stollenwerk , the runner row with Robert Schlienz , Werner Hesse and Herbert Dörner , he could not prevent the 1: 3 defeat. This was followed by four more international B matches against Switzerland (2: 1), Austria (4: 0), the Netherlands (3: 3) and a sensational 1: 4 defeat against Luxembourg on May 1, 1958. In mid-April 1958, the DFB reported Keck to FIFA in the 40-strong list of possible World Cup participants as a left defender alongside Erich Juskowiak , Karl-Heinz Schnellinger and Karl Schmidt .

In the ranking of German football by the sports magazine Kicker-Sportmagazin , Keck was placed in the category “In the wider circle of the national team” in the winter of 1956/57 for the second half of 1956 and in the summer of 1957 for the first half of 1957, alongside players like Willi Gerdau and Hermann Höfer , Josef Posipal , Werner Hesse, Georg Stollenwerk , Hans Weskamp , Karl Schmidt, Herbert Erhardt , Herbert Sandmann , Karl-Heinz Schnellinger and Walter Zastrau .
