Luigi Passerini

Luigi Passerini or Luigi Passerini Orsini de 'Rilli (born October 31, 1816 in Florence , † January 13, 1877 in Florence) was an Italian historian, genealogist and politician.

life and work

Luigi Passerini's father, Francesco, held several offices at the court of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany and the Queen of Etruria . He himself studied law at the University of Pisa and then practiced as a lawyer in Florence. In 1845 he was employed by the archive administration and the aristocratic deputation there, and in 1856 one of the directors of the Florentine State Archives. He was also politically active and in 1848 took part with 500 Tuscans in the Sardinian war of independence against Austria. In 1861 he was elected by the Casentino Valley as a member of the Italian Parliament , in which position he remained for three years. Then he withdrew from political life and returned to scholarly studies. In 1871 he was appointed director of the National Library of Florence. He died in Florence on January 13, 1877, at the age of 60.

Passerini also participated in the continuation of Pompeo Litta's Famiglie celebri italiane and in the publication of Tuscan documents. Together with Pietro Fanfani and Gaetano Milanesi, he also published a critical edition of Machiavelli's works .

Memberships

In 1841 Passerini was introduced by Félix Édouard Guérin-Méneville as member number 219 of the Société cuviérienne .
