Ernest Albert Keetley (born February 22, 1930 in Nottingham , † October 12, 2019 in Bournemouth ) was an English football player .

Career

Keetley played as a center runner for the amateur club Keyworth United in the Nottinghamshire Realm League, based in his home town of Keyworth near Nottingham , in the late 1940s . In January 1948, shortly before his 18th birthday, he was signed on an amateur basis by the professional club Nottingham Forest . Keetley played for Keyworth, one of the leading clubs in the area, even after his registration with Nottingham Forest. Keetley was involved in winning three consecutive league championships (1948 to 1950) and was also in action in the 1949 Realm League Cup final victory .

After leading the Boys 'Club selection from Nottinghamshire to the national semifinals as team captain , he was appointed representative of the Radford YMCA for an England selection of the National Association of Boys' Clubs in April 1948 . In the 1-1 draw against a Welsh Boys' Club selection in the Old Recreation Ground of Port Vale in front of over 4,500 spectators, he was praised by the press for “he didn't let himself be disturbed and his tackles were always well timed . "

After he had returned from his military service from Hong Kong in February 1950 , he was committed as a professional by the second division club Bury in March 1950 . There Keetley, titled as a "junior international" came on January 20, 1951 against Birmingham City (final score 3: 3) as a right defender to his competitive debut, he formed in this and the following two games with George Griffiths the defender pair. After his fourth appearance ended in a 4-0 defeat against Brentford FC , he lost his place in the team again and was subsequently no longer in the first team.

In 1952 he moved to the Football League Third Division South for Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic . At Bournemouth, Keetley, who can be used equally in the two defensive positions, played in coach Jack Bruton's team between September 1953 and November 1954 in over 50 competitive games in a row, in the following years he was mostly a substitute for Laurie Cunningham and Ian Drummond . By his end of career due to a knee injury in July 1959, he played 86 league games and five FA Cup games for Bournemouth.

He subsequently worked as a trainer-coach at Weymouth FC , Bradford City and Exeter City . He quit his job at Bradford in November 1964 to start at Exeter; Bradford head coach Bob Brocklebank left the club that same week . At Exeter he initially worked under coach Jack Edwards , from the beginning of 1965 under Ellis Stuttard . After a first round defeat in the FA Cup 1965/66 against the lower class club Bedford Town in November 1965, he was dismissed from Exeter. After retiring, he earned his living with Bournemouth Social Services for 23 years until he retired in June 1993. Keetley passed away in October 2019.
