Albert-Auguste Maret , called Albert Maret (born March 3, 1900 in Champsec in the Val de Bagnes , Canton of Valais , Switzerland ; † 1984 ) was a Swiss electrical engineer who mainly dealt with the construction of dams . The Lac de Mauvoisin was created on his initiative .

biography

Maret attended secondary school in Saint-Maurice . He felt drawn to a literary career, but at the request of his father decided to study engineering at the ETH Zurich . After completing his training in 1923, it was difficult to find work due to the global economic crisis . Despite a mandate for a power station in Fionnay in 1925, his professional situation remained difficult. Like many Swiss from the Romandie , he tried working in neighboring France in Marseille and Paris to find, but the economic situation there was equally bad as in Switzerland. Finally, in 1928 he joined the electrical engineering group Brown, Boveri & Cie. (BBC) in Baden .

Dam construction

Albert Maret felt drawn to the construction of the dam. His great work was the construction of the Lac de Mauvoisin at the back of the Val de Bagnes, where he grew up. Between 1945 and 1949 he succeeded in obtaining concessions from the affected communities to use the Dranse de Bagnes , where he was in stiff competition with the project to enlarge the Lac des Dix . From 1949 the road from Fionnay to Mauvoisin was extended. The dam was built from 1951 to 1957 according to plans by Alfred Stucky .

Maret also took part in the construction of the dams for Lac de Salanfe and Lac d'Emosson . He was the pioneer of the projects implemented in the era of the great dam construction, which he set up even though well-known professors had previously written a report to the Federal Council in which they stated that there would be no more economic hydropower projects in Valais.

politics and society

Albert Maret is also involved in politics, both at the municipal and cantonal level. He was elected president of the municipality of Bagnes for the first time in 1953, but resigned at the beginning of the legislative period . In the following legislature from 1957 to 1960 he was still president of the municipality of Bagnes and then a member of the legislature council. 1957 to 1965 he was also a member of the Grand Council .

Maret also wrote poetry , but remained unknown as a poet despite publications.
