Life

The Alsatian Merglen worked as a teacher in Dijon from 1934 to 1937 . From 1937 to 1970 he was a professional member of the French army and rose to the rank of general.

After the Second World War , Merglen was head of the Tettnang governorate of the French occupation zone from February 1, 1947 , which also included the heavily destroyed industrial city of Friedrichshafen .

Merglen worked to ensure that the aircraft and armaments site on Lake Constance was not de-industrialized, but that the Zeppelin Foundation and the gear factory in Friedrichshafen were retained. Merglen was committed to German-French friendship at an early age .

Merglen published writings on the military and contemporary history as early as the Second World War. In addition to numerous books and articles on these topics, he also published two books for young people.

In Friedrichshafen on July 5, 1994, in his presence, a branch of a state primary school that had already opened in January 1994 was named after him, the Albert-Merglen-Haus . The school was established in the former French school after the withdrawal of the French armed forces stationed in Friedrichshafen. This school name Merglen called "joy and pride (of his) life". In 1998, the independent Albert-Merglen-Schule emerged from the branch .

In 1997 he was awarded the second highest level of the French Order of Merit for his services to international understanding when he was appointed Grand Officer of the Ordre national du Mérite .
