Albert Piette

Albert Piette (born April 18, 1960 in Namur , Belgium ) is an anthropologist and professor at the University of Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense in the ethnology department. He works on questions of observation of the action, especially in the area of religion, and tries above all to describe and analyze details and the everyday course of the situations.

In his project of an existential anthropology he makes the minor character of reality an essential element, not only to define the anthropological difference, but also to explain coexistence.

For a few years reconsiders Piette, starting from the ideas of Phänomenographie , Ontographie and ontology , the anthropology as a specific discipline with precise theoretical, thematic and methodological orientations, which differs from the sociology and anthropology differs. Its anthropological world with an interdisciplinary sound and comparative intentions is populated with humans, homo sapiens , Neanderthals , monkeys, gods and societies, beliefs, moments and development.

According to Albert Piette, existential anthropology consists of examining man by "existing", perceiving his existence as his own, and knowing that he will lose it. In this sense, it takes into account the micro-continuity of the person who experiences the moments and situations according to various modalities of presence and absence, of passivity and activity. He does not want to see existential anthropology as secondary. He judges it to be essential for anthropology, its future and its liberation from sociology.

In this sense of detailed observations of existences, Albert Piette thinks that ethnography is less favorable than phenomenography, since the first works mainly on complexes (activities and groups), with the last focusing on individual individuals. As the word makes it clear, phenomenography examines on the one hand what appears (shapes, movements, attitudes) and on the other hand, as an empirical counterpoint to phenomenology , it tries to describe states of mind and sensations in the continuity of moments.
