Albert Portevin

Albert Marcel Germain René Portevin (born November 1, 1880 in Paris , † April 12, 1962 in Abano Terme ) was a French metallurgist .

Life

Portevin studied chemistry at the École centrale des arts et manufactures from 1899 and became professor of metallurgy there in 1925. He also taught at other universities such as the École supérieure de fonderie et de forge . In 1907 he became editor of the magazine Revue de métallurgie . With the help of Henry Le Chatelier and Léon Guillet, this magazine achieved a leading position in the field of metallurgy.

In 1942 he became a member of the Académie des Sciences and in 1959 its president. In 1952 he was admitted to the Royal Society as a foreign member , and in 1954 to the National Academy of Sciences . He was a member of the Legion of Honor ( Grand Officier de la Légion d'Honneur ).

Portevin made important contributions to the research of stainless steels , especially the corrosion resistance of chromium steels and their use in the chemical industry. His discoveries and investigations extended to many areas of metallurgy, including the hardening of light metal alloys. In collaboration with Le Chatelier, he discovered the Portevin-Le-Chatelier effect .
