Albert Sammt
Albert Sammt (* 1889 in Niederstetten ; † 1982 ibid) was a German airship and known as a Zeppelin commander.
Life
Albert Sammt was born the son of a ropemaker and joined Luftschiffbau Zeppelin in 1912 . Initially just a simple crew member, he was the helmsman on board LZ 120 "Bodensee" in 1919 . During the first Atlantic crossing of the Zeppelin LZ 126 in 1924, he was an altitude helmsman.
As first officer he was on May 6, 1937 on board LZ 129 “Hindenburg” and survived the Hindenburg disaster with extensive, but mostly superficial burns. He was already back in action on September 27, 1938, now as commander of LZ 130 "Graf Zeppelin II" .
As a commander, on August 20, 1939, he carried out the last voyage of a large airship with the LZ 130.
Honors
His hometown Niederstetten made him an honorary citizen in 1937 . There is an Albert Sammt Museum in the library, Hauptstrasse 52 A. In addition, one of Niederstetten's main streets is named after him.
