Albert Schmidt (politician, 1858)

August Wilhelm Ferdinand Albert Schmidt (born March 2, 1858 in Magdeburg , † October 15, 1904 in Bielefeld ) was a German social democratic politician .

Life

Schmidt attended middle school without a degree. He learned the profession of typesetter and was a typesetter's assistant in various cities until 1886. Since 1884 he belonged to the social democracy. In 1886 and 1887 he worked as an editor of the social democratic newspaper “Volksstimme” in Leipzig . In the course of the socialist law , he was expelled from the city. He then worked as a printing company in Wurzen until 1890 and later as a typesetter in Berlin . Between 1890 and 1894 he was the editor of social democratic newspapers in Burgstädt . After that he was editor of the “ Volksstimme ” in Magdeburg until 1899 .

Between 1890 and 1899 he was a member of the Reichstag . Since 1899 he was also a city councilor in Magdeburg. In 1899 he was sentenced to three years in prison for insulting majesty and all of his political mandates were stripped from him. He was serving his imprisonment in Halle an der Saale . After his release he was again a city councilor in Magdeburg and since 1903 also a member of the Reichstag again. Professionally it remained without a permanent position until 1904 and occasionally worked for social democratic newspapers. After that he was managing director for the party business in Bielefeld until his death.
