Albert Zimmermann (Philosophy Historian)

Albert Zimmermann (born June 5, 1928 in Bergheim ; † December 14, 2017 ) was a German historian of philosophy .

Life

Albert Zimmermann studied philosophy, mathematics and physics in Cologne to become a high school teacher. Until 1957 he worked as a study assessor in Cologne and received his doctorate from Josef Koch on the medieval philosopher Siger von Brabant. In 1961, after studying at Cambridge, Oxford and Paris, he qualified as a professor with a thesis entitled “Ontology or Metaphysics. The discussion on the subject of metaphysics in the 13th and 14th centuries ”. In 1964 he became a scientific councilor and professor in Cologne. In 1966 he accepted a professorship in Siegen.

In 1967 Albert Zimmermann was offered a professorship for Medieval Philosophy at the University of Cologne and from 1967 to 1993 he was director of the Thomas Institute at the University of Cologne and professor for Medieval Philosophy at the Philosophical Department. From 1977 to 1979 he was Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy. In 1993 he retired.

In 1978 he also became director of the “Averrois opera” of the Union Académique International (UAI) and head of the Averroes Latinus office of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences . Zimmermann was president of the Société Internationale pour l'Étude de la Philosophie Médiévale (SIEPM) from 1992 to 1997. Since 1999 he was a member of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas .

The main teaching and research activities were natural philosophy and metaphysics of the 13th and 14th centuries. He has received several awards for his academic study of the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas .

Albert Zimmermann was involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land . In 1984 he was appointed Knight of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master Maximilien de Fürstenberg and invested in the Papal Lay Order on May 19, 1984 in the Würzburg Cathedral by Franz Hengsbach , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy . He was a member of the German Association of the Holy Land .
