Albertina Sisulu
Nontsikelelo Albertina Sisulu (born October 21, 1918 in Cofimvaba , then Transkei ; † June 2, 2011 in Johannesburg ) was a South African anti- apartheid activist and the wife of the anti-apartheid activist Walter Sisulu (1912-2003).
In 1942 she moved to Johannesburg to train as a nurse. There she met Walter Sisulu and married him in 1944. Walter Sisulu was already politically active in the African National Congress at that time . She also became a member of the ANC after the marriage. For the next few decades she was politically active against apartheid and for women's rights. She was serving prolonged prison terms for her job. In 1994 she became a member of the South African parliament after the elections .
From 1993 to 2003 Sisulu was President of the World Peace Council .
She and Walter Sisulu had five children. Her daughter Lindiwe Sisulu has been a minister of various portfolios in the South African cabinet since 2001 . Her son Max Sisulu has been Speaker of the National Assembly since 2009 , her son Zwelakhe Sisulu was Editor-in-Chief of the New Nation and from 1994 to 1997 head of the South African Broadcasting Corporation .
Honors
In 1999 Sisulu received the South African Order for Meritorious Service in gold.
