Cofimvaba is a city in the South African province of Eastern Cape (Eastern Cape). It is the administrative center of the municipality Intsika Yethu Local Municipality and is located in the district of Chris Hani .

In 2011, Cofimvaba had 8,783 inhabitants (census). Most of the residents speak isiXhosa . Queenstown is 79 kilometers to the west. Cofimvaba is in Thembuland, where mainly Thembu live.

history

The place was probably founded in 1877. The meaning of the place name is unclear. In isiXhosa, cofa means “pressing”, mvaba “milk bag made of goatskin”. A nearby river may make noises like squeezing such a bag. Until 1994 the place was in what was then Homeland Transkei .

Economy and Transport

There is a hospital in Cofimvaba. The city is on the R61 trunk road , which connects National Route 6 near Queenstown with Ngcobo, northeast of Cofimvaba, among others .
