Albrecht Pietsch (born September 13, 1934 in Zittau ) is a German mathematician who deals with analysis.

Pietsch studied at the University of Leipzig (diploma 1958) and received his doctorate in 1959 from Max Landsberg with the dissertation "On the theory of sigma transformations in locally convex vector spaces" at the TH Dresden and in 1963 at the Humboldt University of Berlin with Heinrich Grell ( generalized perfect Follow-up rooms , published in 1962 by Akademie Verlag). From 1965 to 2000 he was a professor at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . He has been retired since 1999.

In addition to functional analysis (nuclear locally convex spaces, Banach spaces , operator ideals, s-number function ) he also deals with the history of mathematics and wrote a fundamental history of the theory of Banach spaces.

In 1970 he received the GDR National Prize . In 1974 he became a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and in the same year a member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina . In 1998 and 2008, respectively, he received an honorary doctorate from the Universities of Paderborn and Pretoria .
