Albrecht von Hembsen

Albrecht von Hembsen (* 1625 in Lübeck ; † 1657 in Tallinn ) was an in Estonia working portrait painter of the Baroque .

Life

Albrecht von Hembsen (also von Embsing ) was born as the son of the Lübeck-based painter Hans (Johann) von Hembsen († 1641 in Tallinn). Both worked as painters in the Estonian capital Tallinn (German Reval ).

Albrecht von Hembsen's activity in Tallinn can be traced back to 1641, and in 1647 he was granted citizenship. He is one of the most important portrait painters of the 17th century in Estonia .

Von Hembsen died of the plague in 1657 .

Works

From Hembsen, among other things, the epitaph painting for the Swedish governor of Koporje and Ingermanland , Bugislaus von Rosen (1572–1658), in the Tallinn Nikolaikirche from 1651 (no longer preserved) and the paintings The Baptism of Christ and Saint Christopher in the Tallinn Church of the Holy Spirit attributed.

The epitaph painting The Women at the Tomb of Christ for Colonel Johann Rechenberg from 1643 is now in the Tallinn City Museum. It had its original place in Tallinn's Nikolaikirche.
