Alcanivorax borkumensis is a bacterium that can use a wide range of hydrocarbons and is therefore able tobreak down petroleum . It belongs to the hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria .
The bacterium assimilates only a few simple amino acids or sugars and can only use hydrocarbons (from C 5 to C 32 ) and their derivatives as an energy source , so it is obligatorily hydrogenoclastic. The microorganism was discovered near the island of Borkum (hence the epithet borkumensis ) by scientists from the Society for Biotechnological Research and the Technical University of Braunschweig. In 2006, scientists from the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research , the University of Bielefeld and the Technical University of Braunschweig determined the base sequence of the bacterium's genome .
The microorganism is considered to be ubiquitous , as Alcanivorax strains have been detected in 40 to 50 places in the oceans worldwide . The bacterium is rarely found in clean seawater, but can make up up to 90 percent of the total bacterial population in oil-polluted habitats. It is considered one of the most important petroleum-degrading bacteria.
