Alderston House

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alderston House is a mansion near the Scottish town of Haddington in the East Lothian council area . It was created in the 1790s and was added to the Scottish Monument Lists as a Category B Monument in 1971. The associated coach house is classified as a monument of the highest category A.

Alderston House was a convalescent home from the 1930s and was later sold to the National Health Service . The East Lothian Council finally acquired it in 1975 and uses it as an office building. There have been plans to set up a crematorium there for a long time .

description

Alderston House is off the A1 a few hundred yards north of Haddington. The three-story building is designed in a classical style. The south-facing front is five axes wide. Two flanking pavilions are set back. A short wing was added to the left in the 1830s, which breaks the symmetry. The central, two-winged entrance portal is designed with a portico . This is made with two pairs of Doric columns and a simple frieze . The facade closes with a simple triangular gable . The flanking pavilions are two-story. While the gray sandstone is exposed along the front , the flanks are plastered with Harl . The building closes with a gray slate roof.

Remise

The coach house is 100 m north of the manor house. It was probably built around 1750, with the southern half possibly being an extension from the 1790s. As an architect, John Douglas comes into question. The masonry of the classical building consists of quarry stone and is plastered with Harl. A massive portico with four Tuscan columns and triangular gables dominates the north-facing front. The flanking gate openings close with pressed segment arches with keystones . The back of the building is five axes wide. Twin windows are installed on the protruding axes 1, 3 and 5 . The restored building now houses apartments.
