Aldgate is a small town in the state of South Australia in Australia . It belongs to the state capital, Adelaide, and the Adelaide Hills Council . Aldgate is about 13 miles southeast of the city center and has 3,361 inhabitants. Mayor is Bill Cooksley.

history

The town was probably named in 1882 after the local hotel Aldgate Pump , which Richard D. Hawkins founded in the Adelaide Hills in 1867 . The hotel took its name from the pump installed on the outside and from Aldgate, a former city gate in London.

When the pump became known as a water station for horses and oxen on the way south to the gold fields of Echunga, a small settlement with several shops formed there in 1870. In 1883 the end of the Adelaide railway line was in Aldgate. In November of the same year the line was extended to Nairne .

Aldgate's drainage system created significant problems in the 2000s. The result was flooding in Main Street. The worst case occurred on November 8, 2005. The shops on one side of the street were badly damaged. A new project has meanwhile improved the drainage system around Aldgate.
