Alec Gillis

Alec Gillis is an American special effects expert and director.

Life

Gillis has been interested in creature effects since he was a teenager. He gained his first practical experience in the field of special effects in the early 1980s with several Roger Corman productions. He then graduated from the Film School of the University of California, Los Angeles . After completing his training there, he was involved in several film productions and worked a. a. for Stan Winston . In 1988 he and Tom Woodruff junior founded their own special effects production company called Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc, which is still active today.

Gillis made his debut as a director in 1998 with an episode of the series X-Factor: The Unbelievable . Another episode followed two years later. In 2015 he shot the science fiction horror film Harbinger Down, his first feature film, for which he also wrote the script. The project was u. a. realized with the help of a call made by Gillis at kickstarter .

Gillis was nominated for an Oscar twice for his work - together with colleagues - in 1993 for Alien 3 and 1998 for Starship Troopers . In 1993 he won the BAFTA Award for Best Visual Effects for Death Suits Her . In 1995 and 1998 he received a Saturn Award . There are also several nominations.
