Predator - Upgrade (original title The Predator ) is an American action and horror film by Shane Black , which combines elements of action , horror and science fiction films and was released on September 14, 2018 in US cinemas. In Germany he appeared a day earlier. The film is set in the same fictional universe as Predator from 1987.
action
A spaceship crashes in the immediate vicinity during an operation. The sniper Quinn McKenna is the only one who survives the subsequent confrontation with the Predator and takes his helmet, a combat glove and his cloaking device. Since he is in a foreign country, cannot contact his superiors and is afraid that these items will not be able to cross the border regularly, he sends his helmet and combat gloves as a package to his home address. There his young son Rory receives the package and then examines the two parts. Among other things, he discovers a map on which a position is marked.
The wreck has since been recovered by the military and the scientist Dr. Casey Bracket consulted. During the investigation, the Predator wakes up and kills a large part of the staff. Dr. He spares Bracket, however, as it is completely unarmed. McKenna has since been questioned about the incident and is now to be taken to a special mental health facility to hide the incident from the public. He is on his way there with other former soldiers when the incident in the laboratory occurs and the Predator breaks out. The soldiers band together and overwhelm the guards. On the way, they take Bracket with them and then seek shelter in McKenna's house.
There they only find McKenna's wife, Emily, and neither the helmet nor the son. On the occasion of Halloween, he is out and about with the helmet to collect sweets. The group goes on a search and finds the son shortly before he is tracked down by the Predator. After a short banter in a closed school nearby, they hand over the helmet to the Predator. However, this is killed shortly afterwards by a larger Predator, who also seems to be interested in the helmet.
Dr. Bracket suggests that the smaller Predator may have stolen something and that the larger one was therefore sent to retrieve what was stolen and eliminate the thief. She also suspects that the larger Predator is a genetic evolution, and that Asperger's Syndrome , which affects Rory, could also be an evolution. In general, the intention of all visits to the Predators seems to be to collect and experiment with the DNA of different species in order to improve oneself. This would explain why they always take the prey's head and spine with them and, above all, always choose the fittest of a species.
While everyone gathers at the place that was marked on the map in the helmet, i.e. where the stolen cargo is, the Predator confirms to them that he has actually had an eye on Rory. He shows himself to be very adept at dealing with alien technology and finds out within seconds what entire science teams were unable to do for years. In an attempt to snatch the cargo under the nail as well, a fight breaks out between the Predator and the humans. During this fight, several of McKenna's group die, and young Rory is kidnapped because of his DNA, which is valuable to the Predators. McKenna and Dr. However, Bracket manage to free Rory and kill the Predator.
Because of his talent in dealing with the foreign technology, Rory is then invited by the authorities to work in the research laboratory mentioned above. There his father McKenna visits him while they are investigating the mysterious cargo that the Predator appeared to have been after. As the scientists examine the container, they inadvertently trigger an automated process. The content jumps to one of the terrified scientists and slides over him like a kind of armor in the style of Predator technology. After a short time it breaks away from the scientist and collapses to the size of a suitcase. The scientist is unharmed. McKenna's eyes light up as he realizes what it is and he tells bystanders that the suit seems to be exactly his size.

Background and staff
The film is set in the same fictional universe as Predator from 1987. The actor Keegan-Michael Key, who can be seen in the role of Coyle, said, "It is not a sequel," and added that the film is however set in the universe of the first five films in the series and also contain humorous elements. The score was composed by Henry Jackman . The full soundtrack, which includes 25 pieces of music, was released by Lakeshore Records on September 14, 2018.
Cast and filming
Australian actress Yvonne Strahovski plays Emily, Olivia Munn played Casey Bracket and Boyd Holbrook played Quinn McKenna. In early January 2017, it was announced that Trevante Rhodes would get a role in the film. Rhodes will play Williams, Holbrook's character's best friend in the movie. Also starring are Thomas Jane , Sterling K. Brown , Jacob Tremblay , Kyle Strauts , Paul Lazenby and Alfie Allen to see. In Predator - Upgrade not there is Arnold Schwarzenegger , the star of the first part of the series. As a reason, director Shane Black cited the decision of the responsible studio to rely on a developing cast. In addition, Schwarzenegger was involved in other projects.
Filming began on February 20, 2017. The film was shot in the Canadian city of Vancouver in British Columbia , including on the premises of the Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith Elementary School. Shooting ended on June 2, 2017. Larry Fong acted as cameraman .
Black and Fong had already stated again and again during the shooting that they would consistently use handmade effects for their new Predator edition and want to keep the use of computer-generated images as low as possible. Shane Black had also confirmed that the actor, who plays the eponymous Predator, wears a costume and was not animated on the computer.

A first official German trailer was presented in May 2018. The film was released in US cinemas on September 14, 2018. A cinema release in Germany took place the day before. From September 6, 2018, the film was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival , where it will be shown in the Midnight Madness section and where it celebrated its world premiere.

In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK from the age of 16. The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film is staged at high speed and contains numerous battle scenes and firefights. There are always drastic moments of violence . The film critic Antje Wessels explains that for the Predator upgrade “ [Shane] Black makes use of seemingly worn motifs that other filmmakers today would no longer use for fear of alienating their audience. [...] With an unmistakable macho attitude, he just lets blood and intestines splash and in the decisive moments also relies on so much unrestrained kitsch and pathos [...] that hardly anyone would take this film seriously if those responsible would say it Present with a meta-mentality à la Deadpool .
