Alec Nyasulu

Alec Mjuma Nyasulu (born February 23, 1920 in Mzimba , Nyasaland , today: Malawi ) is a former politician from Malawi.

Life

Nyasulu completed a teacher training at the mission station in Livingstonia after his school education . He then worked as a teacher at the Emoneni School between 1939 and 1942 and, most recently, at the Enkondhlweni School , and during this time he also acquired his General Certificate of Education . During World War II he joined in 1942 in the British Army and took in the aftermath of military action in British India , Ceylon and East Africa in part before it after the war in 1946 as Sergeant ( Warrant Officer Class 2 ) retired from active military service. On his return he worked again as a teacher in Nyasaland and in 1948 completed training as a school inspector in the United Kingdom .

Nyasulu later joined the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), founded in 1959 by Orton Chirwa and Aleke Banda , and was elected for this in 1961 in the constituency of Mzimba South as a member of the Legislative Council of Nyasaland. On August 13, 1963, he succeeded W. Wenban-Smith as spokesman for the Legislative Council and later the Legislative Assembly that emerged from it . After Nyassaland was granted independence by the United Kingdom on July 6, 1964, he became the first speaker of the National Assembly of Malawi (National Assembly) . He held this post until his replacement by Ismail K. Surtee on October 27, 1964.

Nyasulu was subsequently appointed minister to Prime Minister Hastings Banda's cabinet in 1964. After the founding of the Republic of Malawi on July 6, 1966, he took over the post of Minister of Health in President Hastings Banda's cabinet and then in 1968 the post of Minister of Education. After he was Minister of State between 1969 and 1970 in the Foreign Ministry, which was headed by President Banda himself, he became Minister of Health again in 1970.

Nyasulu then took over the office of Speaker of the National Assembly again in February 1971 and held this position until his replacement by Nelson PW Khonje in February 1975.
